DeKalb, IL Portrait Photographer | Kim

You guys, I'm SO excited to introduce you to my friend Kim! She is one of the kindest, gentlest, most caring people I've ever known. When she told me about 7 years ago that she wanted to be a doula, I knew right away it would be a perfect fit for her! She was there for the birth of all 3 of my kiddos and I wouldn't have had it any other way!! It's been such a joy to watch her use her gifts to empower women in childbirth and it was an honor to photograph these headshots for her new website!! (Her site's not ready yet, but be sure to check her out and like her on Facebook!)

You can try to be cuter than her, but it's just not possible.

DeKalb, IL Portrait Photography | Brandon

I don't get to photograph headshots very often, and honestly I was a bit nervous for my session with Brandon since it's a bit out of my comfort zone, but I'm really proud of these images!! I don't have a studio, and that's usually the type of headshots people are looking for when they contact me so I have to refer them elsewhere. I'm grateful that Brandon was up for a more natural look for his website!

Erin : DeKalb, IL Session

In January, I had an opportunity to photograph the very talented Erin Nolan who is a woodblock print artist here in DeKalb.  She got into printmaking because she wanted to help provide some extra income for her family with her artwork, but found it hard to part with her work after spending so much time on it.  Printmaking was the perfect way for her to share her work while being able to hold on to her original creations.  Seeing her process was extremely interesting!!

Her tools.

Those bad boys are SHARP!
Depending on the size, it can take Erin anywhere from days to months to finish a piece.

Check out her website, where you can find a link to her exhibits!
Happy Monday!!! :)

>Music : Casey Crescenzo from The Dear Hunter

>

On Saturday night, I sat in my friend Nick's living room in Chicago and listened to the lead singer of my favorite band play an acoustic show. Casey Crescenzo, from The Dear Hunter, was driving across the country to record a new album and wanted to give back to his fans, so he emailed the lifetime members of The Dear Hunter fan club (of which Nick is a member) to see if he could play intimate living room shows along the way. Serious awesomeness!! Casey played songs and answered questions all night. Trying to avoid another Jasmine Star incident, I kept my mouth shut and listened. :)

My fave from the night. :) Casey can really belt it!
A shot of Nick. He's awesome. :)
You should seriously check out The Dear Hunter's music. It's kind of hard to classify, but there's a little something in there for everyone. :)
Happy Monday!!
Chrissy
~UPDATE~
Here's a video that my hubs made from the show. The song is called "Oracle". I even make cameo! :)
~ANOTHER UPDATE~
Seth made a second, way awesome video from the show. Checkity check it!! I make another cameo, and you can see my sweet little Lucas!

>People : Paul

>One thing I've really loved about photography is reconnecting with old friends. Paul is one of those old friends. We went to DeKalb High School together, and graduated *cough* almost 10 years ago (holy heck, has it really been that long??). I was in choir and the musicals with Paul, not to mention years and years of other random classes (Mrs. Williams AP English was the best!!). Paul went on to get his Masters in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy and has plans for teaching this winter at Knox College. Until then, he needed some headshots for this upcoming Opera season. Enter, Chrissy. :) Now, Paul tried to trick me into thinking that "the camera hates him," but I beg to differ. :)

We snuck in some casual shots as well. That's just how I role. :)
I think this one is my fave!
Paul, it was great to catch up with you!!! Good luck and I hope we meet again soon! :)

>Keslinger's Last Show!

>May 22 was bittersweet. My husband, Seth, who has been in a band for the past 14 years, played his last show with his most recent band, Keslinger. It's a strange not having him in a band since for our entire relationship he's been on stage in one band or another. But it's good. To everything there is a season, right? :) Thankfully the guys in the band are close friends and I know they won't disappear from our lives. Anyways, I was honored to take pictures of the guys last show together. Check out my faves. (Brace yourself, there's lots!)

Chris was the old drummer in their band and came out to play one last time with the guys. He played ukulele and djembe on a couple of songs.

>Snowed In Together

>A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing a few of my friends share their talents on stage at The House Cafe in DeKalb. Kyle, Greg, and Kim put together an evening full of music and storytelling that they titled "Snowed In Together." I laughed, I (almost) cried, I took pictures. It was a great night! Here are a few of my favorite images.

Not only is Kyle an awesome writer, he's a great storyteller. I had never heard any of his stories before, but I was so glad that I had the opportunity to hear them, even if most of them centered on his love of Wisconsin. :)

When it comes to guitar, Greg is A-Maz-Ing. If you've never heard his music before, I seriously recommend you check it out (you can also hear some of Kim's stuff and read an excerpt from one of Kyle's stories). You will not be disappointed.

Kimo is one of my closest friends. She's a kind and loving person, and that is reflected in the music she writes. Her songs bring tears to my eyes!

IMG_5721_2

I really love this picture. For those of you who don't know her, Kimo is an amazing artist. Her main passion is pottery, so she uses her hands a lot. I love the position of her hands here, and the light in the background. She has such beautiful hands, don't you think?

I took this last one because I just really liked the lights. They were so pretty.

>My favorite pictures from 2008

>I recently read an article that suggested going through your old pictures and evaluating them to see where you can improve. I've only been seriously taking pictures since July, so I didn't have much to go through, but it was fun going through my pictures and seeing what I've done in the past 5 months. So here they are, without further ado, my favorite pictures from 2008!

This was the first "serious" picture I took. It was in August, about 3 weeks after I got my new camera and the first time I actually had a specific vision about a picture I wanted to take. My friend Amber wanted a nice picture of her and her husband Brandon and I needed some models.

IMG_0165_3

This next picture was taken at my Mother-in-Law's farm in September.

IMG_0702_2

These next few pictures are of my cutie pie niece, Ellie. These were taken at the beginning of October. I may be a little biased, but isn't she just so sweet??

IMG_1608_2

For this one, which was taken in October, my husband, myself, and some friends went to play disc golf. I didn't feel like playing so I was just messing around with my camera and actually ended up with something I liked!

IMG_1973_2

This one is from Matthiessen State Park and was taken in October.

IMG_2037_3

Another one from October. I took pictures of the band my husband is in, Keslinger. This is a picture of the guitarist, Jon.

IMG_2300_2

This next set of pictures are probably my all time favorite for the year. My friend, Kimo, asked me back in August shortly after I got my camera if I would mind taking pictures for her when she was all big and prego. It was such a great opportunity for me to learn! These pictures were taken at the beginning of November with their adorable (and very photogenic!) dog, Milo.

IMG_2395_4

My husbands bandmate, Ben, asked if I would take some pictures of him for a competition he was in earlier this month. This was taken in December and was one of my favorites.

IMG_3660_2

At the beginning of December, Seth and I decided to take a trip over New Year's since I had time off from work. I've always loved Arizona and he had never been there, so we decided to make the long trek out west. From Illinois it was about 23 hours one way. It may have been a long drive, but for me it was so worth it! I had a really hard time narrowing down my favorites!

These first four are from Saguaro National Park. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend it!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my review of 2008! I'm so excited to see what new opportunities 2009 will bring!
